Don’t Do This

"Aliza Sherman"

I may have mentioned this before, but a few months back when we were reaching out to the various women on our Most Wanted list I accidentally sent Aliza Sherman a potty-mouthed email. It was intended for my partner Jennifer, as a response to Aliza agreeing to be a part of our tele-summit, and it sort of included the acronym OM#mce_temp_url#FG, as in

“OMFG, I can’t believe Aliza Sherman just said yes to us”.

Luckily, Aliza being the gracious and cool cyber chick she is, kept up her reputation, and, just as cool as I knew she’d be after years of following her career, and 30 seconds after I hit the send button to my tech idol of all time, responded something to the effect of “Hi Suzen….ya think? It’s not rocket science”.

Yeah. That happened. We laugh about it now. “Heh heh…..”

“It’s a man’s world out there in cyberspace – but not if Aliza Sherman has anything to say about it. Her mission: empower women and girls through technology.”

-The Wall Street Journal

This, ladies and gents, is who I have the privilege of interviewing tomorrow in Tuesdays segment of our MomtoMompreneurNow! Tele-summit. How cool is that.

Here’s what my ex husbands lecture agency, Greater Talent Network, has to say about her:

“Named by Newsweek as one of the “Top 50 People Who Matter Most on the Internet,” Aliza Sherman is a cyberspace thought leader and sought-after online marketing expert. She opened the door to the power and potential of female online presence when she founded Cybergrrl, Inc. in the early days of the World Wide Web. It

is a pioneering new media and entertainment company at the forefront of creating online programming, products, services and virtual communities. Sherman is also the founder of Webgrrls, a networking group for woman interested in the Internet that currently has over 100 chapters world-wide.

Sherman and her unique, female-based approach to e-business and Internet marketing have been profiled by People, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today,US News And World Report, CBS This Morning and CNN. In addition, she is the author of Cybergrrl: A Woman’s Guide to the World Wide Web and her latest release PowerTools for Women in Business: 10 Ways to Succeed in Life and Work, which highlights the 10 lessons she has lived and learned while running a business and searching for a purpose and features the stories of over 70 other women who share their experience and advice.”

Her newest project du force is Pinterest, and today at 1 PM EST, with us on our Mom to Mompreneur Now! tele-summit, she will be sharing not only her inspirational journey of how where got to where she is today in a field which up until now has been known as a mans world, but also

on all things Pinterest- how it can help grow your business, why it is being hailed as the fastest growing social media platform on the internet, and some of the most effective ways that Pinterest can work for you.

I am hopeful that Aliza really is as cool as her persona, and forgives my little faux pas a few months back, seeing it rather as the compliment it was intended as. Heh heh……

Technophobe-Schmeknophobe

Week 2 of our Mom to Mompreneur Now! tele-summit ended with a big whahoo! And as Jennifer and I sat

through both Jane Pollak’s interview on Tuesday and Kathy McShane’s interview on Thursday clasping hands and praying to our respective Gods that no technical snafoo’s would occur, I can happily report that we made it through both events with no lost connections, no hang ups, and plenty of interaction. We built it, we spread it, people came. Maybe Kevin Costner was right after all. Both Jane and Kathy were oh so generous with their time, their tips and their stories, folks actually asked questions and were able to walk away with a huge amount of value which I’m hoping they plan on putting to god use ASAP.

Are you a-scared of technology? Does the idea of doing social media make your eyes roll back in your head? Are you clueless and exhausted at the idea of making sure you’re business is front and center when people are looking for you? Fear no more (insert loud drumroll and trumpets). This week we tackle the technical side of being found like it’s kindergarten. You’ll walk away saying “this is what I was so afraid of? Easy Peazy stuff!”

Channeling My Inner Mompreneur

mom to mompreneur now
Exactly 7 days, and 0 hours until blast off. It’s a rare day that I shamelessly promote something, but I took it as a sign that it was ok to do when I sat down to write this blog EXACTLY 7 days and zero minutes to the launch date of our Mompreneur tele-summit, aptly named momtomompreneurnow. So sue me, but I’m going to hold that when someone puts so much blood sweat and tears, not to mention more than a few sleepless nights into a project, that they have a right to squawk a bit about it.
I’m jazzed, yeah, passionate, and focused like a laser beam on pulling off a successful event, which is proving to be more work than any other project that I can remember creating, but here’s what I’m realizing: by producing this event, I’m a living example of why it is necessary, and proof that I’m doing the right thing. No time like the present!
Fragmented time, always an issue, is being tested more than ever, and constantly: being there for my daughters foray into high school, and being present at her field hockey games…how????? Most of them are at 4:30 mid week. Laundry piles both dirty, and clean waiting to be folded sit untouched. Take out dinners have graced our table more than I’d like to admit these past few weeks. I’m not complaining…I’m just constantly testing the limits of my abilities, given the 24 hour clock that refuses to stop ticking. A clone would help, or a nanny, a few employees. Barring that….
I’ve been juggling these things for years, as have most mothers I know, single or not, so you know what? I know in my heart of hearts that producing an event to help mothers like me ( and some dad’s I’m starting to see sign up) learn how to work smart, not hard…. is a gift. I’ve watched several of the guest experts we’re bring on grow their businesses to 6 and 7 figures, most of them, with children in tow. So why not spread the love. They all are offering their time so generously, are so inspirational, and are there to share their tips on how they managed to grow their own businesses, the mistakes they made along the way, and they are giving back. And I’ve got some tip[s of my own, for all of you bloggers out there.
We gotta stick together, us moms trying to juggle it all- making real money growing our businesses and not forfeiting our time with our kids. We need to support each other and raise awareness on what tools , tips and programs are out there to help us. More and more, these tools are available both online and off—especially on.
I am so ready both to share and to learn. So call me shameless.
Free sneak peek next Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 PM EST. Be there or be square!

Less Is More

I love when I think along the same lines as Seth Godin, and at the same time to boot. I’d just woken up this morning thinking if I had to read one more long email or blog entry I was going to explode. And then  this hit my in box.

Listen: if you want people to read your brilliance and pay close attention to your sage advice, you gotta keep it short and sweet. We are all too ADD these days because there is so much being thrown at us. Ok, I’ll speak for myself but I know I’m not alone. Less can be more. Look at Hemmingway. I think he’s more popular now amongst the ADD crowd then when he was first published. Why? Because his sentences are short. To the point. Sparse, yet crafted beautifully into phrases that hit your sweet spot. He would have made a great Tweeter!

Here’s the skinny: if you want more folks to read your stuff, and to remember your words, break them down into small but memorable sound bites. We’ll remember you more. Think like Hemmingway:

“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut”. Brilliant.
